How THC and CBD Actually Interact With Your Mind

For decades, one image defined cannabis in popular culture:
an egg cracking into a frying pan, accompanied by the words — “This is your brain on drugs.”

Launched during the War on Drugs, this message was designed to shock, simplify, and discourage. It reduced complex substances into a single idea: damage.

But science has come a long way since then.

Today, we understand that cannabis does not simply “fry” the brain. Instead, it interacts with a biological system that already exists within us — one that plays a crucial role in how we think, feel, and experience the world.

The Endocannabinoid System: Your Brain Was Already Prepared

Long before humans used cannabis, the body evolved the endocannabinoid system (ECS) — a network of receptors and signalling molecules responsible for maintaining balance.

This system helps regulate:

  • Mood
  • Memory
  • Sleep
  • Appetite

Cannabis works not because it’s foreign, but because its compounds closely resemble molecules the body already produces.

In other words, your brain isn’t being “overridden” — it’s being activated in a different way.

THC and CBD: Two Compounds, Two Realities

Not all cannabis experiences are the same. The effects depend largely on the balance between two key cannabinoids.

THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol)

THC is the compound most associated with the classic “high.”

It binds directly to CB1 receptors in the brain, influencing:

What Actually Happens in the Brain?

This explains why cannabis can:

Why Time Slows Down

One of the most commonly reported effects of cannabis is altered time perception.

The result?
Time feels stretched.

What the old campaigns framed as “loss of control” can also be understood as a shift in perception — one that has been described for centuries.

Creativity: Expansion or Illusion?

Cannabis has long been linked to creativity.

From a scientific perspective, it may:

  • Increase divergent thinking
  • Reduce mental filtering
  • Encourage abstract connections

However, there’s a balance.

While ideas may flow more freely, the ability to refine and execute them can decrease — particularly at higher doses.

Cannabis may open doors, but it doesn’t always help you walk through them.

Dose, Context, and Experience

The difference between a positive and negative experience often comes down to one thing: balance.

Lower doses may:

Higher doses can:

  • Overstimulate the brain

Set, setting, and individual biology all play a role — something early anti-drug campaigns largely ignored.

From Propaganda to Understanding

The original “brain on drugs” campaign was powerful — but it was also simplified.

It treated all substances as equal and ignored nuance, biology, and context.

Modern science tells a different story.

Cannabis is not without effects — but it is also not the one-dimensional threat it was once portrayed to be. Instead, it is a complex plant interacting with a complex brain.

Rethinking the Narrative

At the Cannabis Museum Amsterdam, part of the mission is to move beyond outdated narratives and explore cannabis through science, history, and culture.

Because understanding cannabis isn’t about fear — it’s about knowledge.

And the more we learn, the clearer the picture becomes:
